Music at St. Peter's

Plainsong

For over 100 years St Peter’s had a traditional robed choir of men and boys and was able to continue in this tradition long after many choirs ceased to exist.  St Peters now admits ladies and children (of both sexes) to the choir, and after a few years of experimentation with this it is now the settled format.  We continue to uphold the traditional music of the church including all the Advent, Christmas and Easter services as well a regular Choral Evensong.  If you are interested in joining please contact the choirmaster or organist, details on the contacts page.

Because of the above, this page is now out of date from hereon, but pending a planned update of the whole website we have left it in place as in indicator of the musical tradition of the church.

Choir

Choir at Wymondham Abbey

The choir at Wymondham Abbey, August 1999

St. Peter's has a traditional fully robed choir of some twenty-five or over gentlemen and boys. Many of the men are accomplished musicians of local repute, but this is not a requirement for membership! By their nature boys are to some extent transient - their voices break, and even if they come back as men, they often leave to go to college or to work away from home. There is thus a constant need to recruit new members, of any age. If you, or your son, would like to know more, please contact the Acting Choirmaster, David Wood on 01376 327606.

'On Safari'

Over the years the choir has been invited to sing in cathedrals, churches and other venues over a wide area. This usually takes the form of a Saturday choral evensong when the resident choir is being given a hard earned rest. In 1999 these visits were to Coventry Cathedral (in January), St Edmundsbury Cathedral (March), Cressing Temple Barns (June) and Wymondham Abbey (August, for a long weekend with services on Saturday and Sunday). All are welcome to come along and a coach is usually provided at a reasonable cost. More details will appear here as the plans for 2000 develop. Reports on these events will also be included, but if you want to read what one of our younger members thought of Wymondham, read on.

A Chorister writes about the long weekend at Wymondham, August 1999..........

...........and he does, brilliantly! So well that I thought it better not to type up his contribution but to let you see the actual manuscript. It may take some time to download. Oh, if ever you thought they were little angels - well, you didn't, did you? So here's Graham's contribution - click on the picture of Wymondham Abbey.
