For over 100 years St Peter’s had a traditional robed choir of men and boys and was able to continue in this tradition long after many choirs ceased to exist. St Peters now admits ladies and children (of both sexes) to the choir, and after a few years of experimentation with this it is now the settled format. We continue to uphold the traditional music of the church including all the Advent, Christmas and Easter services as well a regular Choral Evensong. If you are interested in joining please contact the choirmaster or organist, details on the contacts page.

Come and sing music for royal occasions 3 March 2012

Press Release:

Celebrate the Diamond Jubilee

In the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the ‘Annual Singing Day’ at St. Peter’s Church, Bocking, will focus on ‘Music for Royal Occasions’. The event, on Saturday 3rd March, will attract a choir of over 70 singers from Essex and beyond, who will rehearse the music in the afternoon and give an evening performance at 7.30pm. Musical Director David Wood, who has hosted the event for seven years, stated that: “The Annual Singing Day has become a popular part of the musical calendar of Braintree, with singers and audience looking forward to the event in the splendid acoustic of St. Peter’s Church”. Coronation Anthems will include Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Parry’s I was Glad sung by the massed choir; John Rutter’s Royal Wedding anthem This is the Day sung by the St. Peter’s Sixteen; and piano music by Grieg and Ravel for ‘fantasy’ royal events played by Stephen Wood.  The organist for the day will be Richard Reed.

Admission to the concert is £5.00 (under 18’s free). Any singers wishing to take part should contact David Wood (01376 327606); the rehearsal starts at 3.30pm, with refreshments (provided) at 5.45pm. All music is provided, and the cost for singers is £8.00 (under 18’s free).
