What is the Blackwater Consort?…..

It was late in the year 2000 that David Wood (counter tenor) and Keith Coleman (piano) got together to rehearse some Dowland and Purcell for fun. It was Keith who suggested  "Wouldn’t it be nice if we could put on a concert…."; the result of this comment was the acclaimed recital that took place at St. Peter’s Church, Bocking, in May 2001. Works by Dowland, Purcell, Handel, Britten and others were performed, and for two of the Purcell items David and Keith were joined by Stephen Woodcraft (counter tenor) and Peter Marsden (cello). The recital ended with the celebrated Purcell duet "Sound the Trumpet".

A chance comment at a musical event in Colchester brought Tabitha Collingbourne to this recital, having revealed that she was a recorder player and owner of a spinet. A search of the early music repertoire revealed that much of the music for counter tenor often required a recorder, so music was purchased and the quartet became a quintet.

It became apparent that much of the music required two recorders, so a search was made for a second recorder player. Another chance comment at a Royal School of Church Music event in Harwich brought the recorder player Moira White into the fold, and the quintet became a sextet!

The members of the group all have, or have established, roots in the heart of Essex and a suitable name was sought. The river Blackwater flows through this area and the thought appealed to the group.
