Counter Tenor and ‘cello
David Wood has been singing since he was seven, joining the Choir of St. Peter’s Bocking as a boy and serving as Head Chorister in the early 1970’s. When his voice broke, David sang counter tenor (alto), finding church bass too low and tenor too high. David does, however, often sing as a baritone, singing with Braintree Opera in four productions and numerous concerts between 1986 and 1995, and continues to sing with Braintree Male Voice Choir.
It is his counter tenor voice that is David’s first love, and he has recently developed his solo voice and repertoire. David sang ‘Music for a While’ at a Purcell celebratory concert in 1995 and, finding Purcell’s music perfect for his voice, David decided to explore the Purcell songbook. He now has ten Purcell songs in his repertoire and a total of over forty in his library. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Henry Purcell, like David, was proficient in both his counter tenor and bass voice! David also enjoys performing the music of John Dowland and J.S. Bach.
